Finally started 30DC

I'm pleased to say that after talking about it I finally got my act together and started on 30DC stuff last night. Well until nearly 3am to be honest but it is addictive once you start. I still have some more catching up to do but am really looking forward to learning lots more useful tips. I am already making full use of my new knowledge of Twitter!

Anyway, for the time being I had better get back to some work that I was supposed to be doing las… Continue

Back to the Grindstone

This is going to be a short blog. I know I haven't written one for a while and I thought it was about time I wrote something.

Well I returned from holiday a few days ago. We went on a lovely break to Calgary in Canada staying with my brother-in-law and his family. It was a refreshing break not sitting up on the computer till all hours and to be able to spend time with my husband and 2 children without constantly checking emails. Okay, I admit I did have a few peeks at my emails most days but th… Continue

Isn't It Typical?!

Business for me was fairly quiet for most of April and the first half of May. Then the last week or two things have really picked up which is great. However, at almost exactly the same time that work got busier, Chloe who is 7½ months has started waking at night. What timing!

Practically from day one she has slept through the night so I have been spoilt but isn't it typical that she just starts waking up when I have a busy spell of work. I normally try to get as much of my work done in the even… Continue

National Work From Home Day - Thursday 15th May 2008

Did you know that today, Thursday 15th May is National Work From Home Day in the UK?

“National Work From Home Day” is an initiative run by Work Wise UK which started in 2005. Enterprise Nation carried out the Home Business Report in October 2007 which found that
* more than 60% of businesses are started from home
* over 1400 home businesses are started every week.
* home based businesses account for around 28% of employment (almost a third of the total workforce) and they have a combined turnov… Continue

Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce Networking Lunch

I thought I would write a bit about the networking event I went to this Tuesday. It was run by the local Chamber of Commerce in a local hotel. I've been to networking events before but although I have had several emails before about the Chamber of Commerce ones I've never actually been to one. The venues vary but as this one happen to be very local to me I thought why not give it a go. They are expensive at £28.50 but I thought I would splash out. Well it did include a 2 course lunch as well as… Continue

Hi Yvette,
Can you tell me exactly what you do as a Virtual Assistant? I've heard of it before but not quite sure what it can entail. Oh, very nice to meet you....

ah that's ok (about the delay) we're all busy, no probs!

I didn't start with the intention of doing a degree, just wanted to study to prove to myself that my brain was capable of more than musing about "teletubbies" and "storymakers", one course so of lead to another... and here I am in my fourth year with two more to go.

If you do decide to carry on from your diploma you won't regret it, though there will be times when you'll wonder why you ever thought it was a good idea, lol!

It's going to take me six years in total doing one 9 month module per year, trust me those 3 months "off" over christmas wing by!

Each module is expensive, yes, unless you qualify for help with the finance. And each one carries points.. you need a certain amount of points to get the degree (I think it's 360 but I'd need to check!).

Yes it is interesting, especially as you can do an open degree which offers you more choice of courses. I've chosen to do a pure Psychology degree so I am restricted as to what courses I have to study and pass, this year's one would not have been one of my choices, lol!

Have a look http://www.open.ac.uk/ you should be able to find out a lot of info there quite quickly, costs, timings, what you would need for specific degrees etc. Regarding starting at a higher level, there might be info there too, as I said I was a complete newbie so I don't know.

hi Yvette...well yes I do find it hard at times I have to admit. Sometimes, most times, I'm up till at least midnight/one ish to get everything done (not necessarily coursework, just everything else that mummies do!).

With the OU there is the possibility of getting yourself ahead, there is a timetable to keep you on schedule. I am regularly two weeks behind until essay time mind you! I have friends who do two courses simultaneously... I couldn't contemplate doing that but they manage it.

I'd say give it a go, start yourself on the track, if you've done a dipolma you're further ahead than I was when I began as I'd never done A levels. :o)

Thanks for all your lovely comments, Yvette, both here and on GP! Yes, our boys were born close together - Tom was right at the beginning of November (he's exactly 2.5yrs today actually and has just gone off to pre-school for the first time so I am a bit of an emotional wreck, having just waved him off!). We're having a little girl in September so it will be nteresting to see what impact the pinkness has on our home!
